Dealing with a boiler Leak

Is Your Boiler Not Working? Don’t Panic! Here’s What to Do Next

As a homeowner, few things are more frustrating than a boiler breakdown, especially during cold weather. If your boiler isn’t working, leaving you without heat and hot water, don’t panic! As the Edinburgh Boiler Cover Company, we’re here to guide you through the steps you should take when your boiler stops working.

Steps To Take When Your Boiler Stops Working Properly

Step 1: Check the Basics

Before calling an engineer, check a few basic things that could be causing your boiler problems. First, ensure your boiler is receiving power. Check the switch, circuit breakers, and fuse box for any issues. Next, examine your boiler thermostat settings, ensuring it’s set to “heat” and at an appropriate temperature.

If you have a prepayment meter, check your credit. Insufficient credit can cause your boiler to shut down. If you’ve recently topped up, reset your meter to restart the boiler.

Lastly, check the boiler pressure gauge. Low pressure can prevent your boiler from working properly. You can usually re-pressurize the system yourself using the filling loop, following the instructions in your boiler manual.

Step 2: Refer to Your Boiler Manual

If the basic checks don’t resolve the issue, consult your boiler manual’s troubleshooting section. Look for your specific error code or fault reference, which can help identify the problem.

Some issues, like a frozen condensate pipe or a pilot light that won’t stay lit, may have simple DIY fixes. However, if you’re unsure or uncomfortable making repairs yourself, call a gas-safe registered engineer.

Step 3: Call a Gas Safe Registered Engineer

If you’ve checked the basics and consulted your manual, but your boiler still isn’t working, it’s time to call a heating engineer. At Edinburgh Boiler Cover, we offer a first-time fix and cover plan with a £99 callout charge for those not currently on another cover plan.

Here’s How Our First-Time Fix Works:

  1. You pay a fixed fee: For £99, we’ll send a gas-safe engineer to repair your boiler and get it back up and running.
  2. Your boiler gets repaired: Our locally trained, highly rated, expert gas-safe registered engineers will diagnose the issue and repair your boiler using quality parts that adhere to current gas regulations.
  3. You get fully covered: After the initial repair, you’ll be enrolled in our boiler and central heating cover plan for just £25 per month. This comprehensive coverage gives you peace of mind, knowing future issues will be addressed quickly without unexpected costs.

Step 4: If Your Boiler Can’t Be Repaired

Sometimes, a boiler may be beyond economical repair (BER). This typically occurs when the repair cost exceeds 50% of the replacement cost and the boiler is over 7 years old. In such cases, we’ll provide a quotation for a new boiler.

Other instances where a boiler may be considered BER include:

  • The boiler is unsafe due to non-compliance with current gas regulations. We’ll quote you to bring the installation up to standard before any repairs.
  • The boiler is on a reduced parts list, meaning necessary parts are no longer available.
  • The fault is due to sludge or magnetite within the system. We’ll quote you to cleanse the system and remove any dirt.

If we can’t repair or take the boiler onto our contract, the £99 callout charge is non-refundable but will be discounted from the new boiler quotation.

Step 5: Prevent Future Breakdowns

Once your boiler is working again, take steps to prevent future breakdowns. Regular maintenance is key to keeping your boiler in top condition and extending its lifespan. By signing up for our cover plan, you’ll receive an annual boiler service, which includes a thorough inspection and cleaning.

Additionally, consider the following tips:

  1. Bleed your radiators regularly to ensure even heat distribution and prevent cold spots.
  2. Insulate your pipes to protect against freezing during cold weather.
  3. Keep the area around your boiler clean and free from clutter for proper ventilation.
  4. Monitor your boiler pressure gauge and top up the pressure as needed.
  5. Schedule professional servicing annually, even if your boiler seems to be working fine.

By following these steps, you can minimise the risk of unexpected boiler breakdowns and ensure your home stays warm and comfortable.
